Going to a new school

Tom has had to change schools a few times. This guide has helped him realise that lots of people have mixed feelings about starting at a new school.

About Tom

Tom: red hair, torn trousers, has a football

Tom is 15. He likes playing football and doing gigs with his band.

Tom is in care. He lives in a residential unit because his mum isn't able to look after him.

He wants to be a car mechanic after he leaves school.

Starting at a new school and not knowing anyone. Also, people who don't understand why he's in care and say stuff that upsets him.

Changing schools

Tom has lived in a 4 different residential units, so he's had to change schools a few times. Each time, his teachers have made sure they pass on information about the help he needs.

Going to meetings

Tom has an advocate who helps him get his views across at meetings. His advocate works for Who Cares?. They help young people in care.

Help planning what he will do after he leaves school

Tom had a meeting with his guidance teacher to talk about what he wants to do when he leaves school. His school arranged for him to go to college one day a week to do car mechanics.
