Top tips
We want you to be safe and have fun online and with your mobile. Our top tips are:
- Be very careful with contact details, photos and personal information.
- Only send things you are happy for anyone to see now and in the future.
- Respect other people's privacy and feelings.
Stay safe...
- Use a nickname or just your first name, and a cartoon or avatar instead of a photo, for things like chatrooms, profiles and blogs.
- Never put info about where you live or go to school in the same place as photos of you.
- Keep your contact info private. Never put things like your mobile number, email, home address or school on a webpage, profile or chatroom.
- Don't agree to meet online friends in the real world. If someone wants to meet you, tell an adult you trust. If you are meeting someone, please take an adult with you.
Stay in control...
- Make your profiles private so only friends can see them.
- Keep your passwords secret, even from your friends.
- Try not to write angry messages even if someone annoys you - stay cool!
- Be very choosy about who you accept as a friend online.
- Be yourself - don't get pressured into doing something you don't want to do.
Avoid problems...
- Talk to adults you trust in real life about what you do online.
- Don't send info, photos or gossip about other people without asking them first.
- Watch out for junk messages, links to dodgy sites and scams to get your money - ignore the links, don't reply and don't give out your details.
Sort problems...
- Talk to an adult you trust in the real world about any problems or worries.
- If you don't know who to talk to, call ChildLine on 0800 1111.
