Going to meetings

Miki has a meeting every term to talk to her teachers about how she's getting on at school and the support she needs. The tips in this guide have helped her feel more confident about having a say at these meetings.

Your area - a map of local youth projects

Miki found out about a youth club that has wheelchair access and is near her school. She goes there every Friday now to hang out with people and use the internet.

About Miki

Miki -- a bit punky, uses a wheelchair

Miki is 15, and is hoping to go to college to study music.

She wants to be a DJ or music producer. She's a bit worried that some clubs and music studios have got stairs or narrow spaces she can't get into with her wheelchair. But she's not going to let anything stop her doing what she wants to do!

At school

Miki likes...

Having a say at the pupil council and being a buddy for first years.

Miki doesn't like...

PE (she goes for physiotherapy during PE, which makes her feel left out from the class). Also, being late for classes because the lift is broken (again).

Miki gets help with...

Moving around

She gets to leave class early so the corridors aren't crowded. She's got her own key for using the lifts.

Being healthy

She gets physiotherapy and help to go swimming.

Problems at home

When Miki's parents split up she found it hard to keep up with her schoolwork because she was so upset. She talked about it to her favourite teacher, who said she could have more time to do her work if she needed it. Miki found some useful advice about family break up on Childline's website.
